Masood Sharif Khan Khattak’s Rebuttal To PPP Senator Faisal Raza Abidi’s Prompted Allegations

A PPP Senator from Karachi one Faisal Raza Abidi who has been made a Senator as a matter of charity made some absurd allegations against Masood Sharif Khan Khattak that were carried in The News of 19 April 2010. The Essence of those allegations were that Masood Sharif Khan Khattak had given an affidavit against Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto after the dismissal of her first government and had thus damaged her. He alleged that Masood Sharif Khan Khattak had tapped various dignitaries telephones in his capacity as the DG IB and that Masood Sharif Khan Khattak had started a propaganda against the PPP the President and the cabinet colleagues of the President.
It may be recalled by some that prior to these allegations Masood Sharif Khan Khattak had been a guest on Geo TV’s most popular programme Meray Muttabiq ( video available in the video section of this site) and had been very critical of the role of Rehman Malik on 27 December 2007 i.e. the day of the tragic assassination of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Rehman Malik today is the “imposed” Interior Minister of Pakistan which is a tragedy in itself.
Masood Sharif Khan Khattak, a former Director General Intelligence Bureau and a much higher placed person than Rehman Malik in the bureaucracy of the nineties as well as in the PPP hierarchy till he resigned from the PPP in December 2007 responded to all these allegations that came through the pen/mouth of the charity Senator Faisal Raza Abidi on the behest of Rehman Malik. Masood Sharif Khan Khattak’s remarks were carried in The News of 20 April 2010 and are reproduced below.

Rebuttal
Faisal Raza Abidi a new-found loud mouth Senator masquerading as a leader of the PPP issued a misguiding statement about me that was published in The News of 19 April 2010. He cast doubts on my loyalties for the PPP over the past. To put him in his place I shall only present before the readers what Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had to say to me through her remarks on a book that she presented to me at her residence in Dubai on 30 May 2007. In her remarks she had said “To Masood Sharif Sahib, With much appreciation for your courage and devotion to PPP.” ( I do hope The News can publish these remarks in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s own hand as the same are attached.)

To Abidi, the publicity seeking new found Senator of the PPP who I had never seen in the corridors of power during the two governments of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto or in any other party meeting of the PPP held by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto I shall say that he should speak only as much as is expected of someone as insignificant as he is. Attaching a charity title reading “Senator” does not qualify an individual to talk on every matter under the sun.

In February, 1992, I stood as a witness in the Secret Service fund reference filed by Ghulam Ishaq Khan against Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. In that reference Chaudhary Aitzaz Ahsan was Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s lawyer. Mr Abidi should ask Aitzaz Ahsan and he will be told that if my statement had not been as forcefully in favour of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as it actually was my leader i.e. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would have been disqualified by Ghulam Ishaq Khan as far back as 1992. That was my courage and devotion along with a lot more that happened in the next sixteen years that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto appreciated in her written remarks in May 2007 saying “To Masood Sharif sahib, With much appreciation for your courage and devotion to PPP”

Later, had I not made possible the infamous Malik Qayyum cassettes reaching London while being at great risk myself as I lived in Islamabad Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the incumbent President Mr Asif Ali Zardari would have been convicted and plucked out of the politics of Pakistan and Raza Abidi and many like him who are today in various positions would not have been in those positions. It is this and many such actions of mine that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto appreciated in those remarks of hers when she wrote, addressing me on 30 May 2007 in Dubai, “with much appreciation for your courage and devotion to the PPP”. I may add that on this occasion in Dubai (May 2007) she said to me that she considered me just as real brother.

May I add for the knowledge of the Raza Abidi’s of this world who can do nothing but create more and more problems for those whom they serve that when I was imprisoned in Karachi jail with the incumbent President Mr Asif Ali Zardari my children were taken by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto with her to UK for a month long vacation that they spent with her. Where were you then, Mr Abidi? You think Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would do this if she thought I had been disloyal to her? Are you questioning Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s judgment about me? I don’t need any certificates from you Mr Abidi. I am only elaborating for the knowledge of the readers that you tried to mislead.

On 04 February 1997, I took the complete blame for all telephone tapping that ever took place in the governments of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and I owned this responsibility on the floor of the Supreme Court saying in unambiguous terms that the responsibility was all mine and that no blame can be apportioned to the then Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Could you do that Raza Abidi had you been in my place and had been brought to the Supreme Court in a prisoners’ van all the way from Karachi Prisons? If Mr Abidi wants more details on all this he will have to talk to the incumbent President Mr Asif Ali Zardari who was a witness to all this as we were then in prison together. I shall suggest to Raza Abidi to discuss the statement he made on me with my friend the President who will, I am sure, be quite annoyed with Abidi for having issued such a ridiculous statement regarding me. If Abidi is really looking for people disloyal and insincere to the PPP and the President he should not bother about people like me who are neither in the power corridors nor in the party but must look inwards and he might be able to spot people like Rehman Malik.

I have had the honour of being the only DGIB that Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto ever had in the real sense. In her first tenure although I was at the No 2 position I was, in fact and for all practical purposes, the defacto head of the IB. In the second government of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto I was her formal DGIB till the last night of her government when I was arrested from Lahore even before Mr Asif Ali Zardari was arrested that night. Later I and Mr Asif Ali Zardari were jail mates in Karachi Central Prison for three long years chatting away the days together.

Now, is Abidi doubting the ability of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to select and appoint for her government an intelligence chief who was effective, competent, upright, dedicated and devoted to the country and the government? If I had acted against Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s first government and her own political interests why did she again appoint me as the DG IB and then keep me there till the end of the government and, thereafter, also appoint me a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the PPP as well as Vice President PPP Parliamentarian? From your infinite wisdom can you answer that Mr Abidi? That, today people like Rehman Malik and Abidi have become the front of the mighty PPP is indeed a sad commentary.

Let me say I have never ever been refused a meeting by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. In fact, despite Rehman Mailk’s best efforts that I be kept away from my Shaheed leader I never had a problem seeing her in London whenever I had wanted to meet her. In London I attended so many inner core meetings. Mr Abidi ask Rehman Malik and he will tell you. Once, after a CEC meeting in London I was the only one who was invited by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to join her at the place where she was going from the CEC meeting. I was the only one extended this invitation by my Leader – May ALLAH THE ALMIGHTY grant her soul eternal peace in the best of heavens.

As a word of advice to Abidi I will like to say that if you want to do any good to the PPP and its leadership you will do it well if you kept your assumed infinite wisdom and compulsive loud mouthing under restrain. 1. Peoples like Abidi are disgrace to PPP and ultimatly to democracy.
Abidi is double zero infront of brother Masood Sharif who is the among those whoes services are un-matched and who was very close confidence and supporter of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, brother Asif Ali Zardari and PPP.
